Mr. Bernie Hall

Conductor of the Middle School Symphonic Band

            Mr. Bernie Hall is the Music Specialist at Hampton Academy and Gillespie Park Elementary Schools in Greensboro.  He is a native of Greensboro and graduated from Grimsley High School in 1975.  He received a Bachelors of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1979 and a Masters of Music from the University of Illinois in 1981.  Mr. Hall was the recipient of the prestigious Thomas J. Stone Award at UNCG. 

Mr. Hall has taught middle and high school band in North Carolina for the past twenty-four years.  During that time, he has been named “Band Director of the Year” and has received the “Award of Excellence” from his colleagues in the Central District, as well as being named “Teacher of the Year” at Asheboro High School.  Bernie was elected into the American School Band Directors’ Association (ASBDA) and, most recently, earned National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification in 2002.  Mr. Hall has taught at the UNCG Summer Music Camps since their beginning in 1983 and is a frequent All-County Band clinician, guest conductor, and band contest adjudicator across North Carolina and into Virginia. 

Bernie plays guitar and bass guitar and sings in his church praise band.  He also plays bass trombone in the Randolph Jazz Band and trombone in an area Top-40 band, “The Triad Project.”  Mr. Hall is a member of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the North Carolina Association of Educators, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. 

Bernie’s family includes his wife, Gwen; daughter, Kathleen (19), an oboist and sophomore NC Teaching Fellows Scholar at UNCG; son, Steven (17), a percussionist, guitarist, actor and high school senior; and a miniature dachshund, “Nutmeg”(13).  Mr. Hall and his family reside in Asheboro.  Bernie is also the proud finisher of four Ironman Triathalons.
