Competency Goals (Honors III) (national standards include 8 activities)  
     
1. The learner will sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music    
1.01 in class instrumental parts singing teacher observation
2. The learner will play, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music    
2.01 play instrumental literature at the IV-V level of difficulty teacher observation
2.02 play instrumental literature as a member of a chamber ensemble and as a soloist at the IV-V level of difficulty teacher observation
2.03 perform complex rhythmic patterns in the literature studied including advanced syncopated rhythms teacher observation
2.04 demonstrate control of dynamic levels while maintaining appropriate tone control as required by the style of music teacher observation
2.05 perform all major and minor scales including (natural, harmonic and melodic) and their arpeggios (percussion on mallets) teacher observation
2.06 Perform modal and chromatic scales for two octaves (percussion on mallets) teacher observation

3. The learner will improvise melodies in a variations and accompaniments

4. The learner will compose and arrange music with specific guidelines    
4.01 create an arrangement of at least one piece of existing instrumental literature and incorporate voicing and ranges teacher observation
4.02 incorporate the study and characteristics of several styles of music in creating at least two original compositions teacher observation
4.03 Use a variety of sound, notation, and technological sources to compose or arrange music teacher observation
5. The learner will read and notate music    
5.01 demonstrate the ability to read a full instrumental score by describing the elements of music used, the transpositions and clefs in a written analysis of the music Graded assignment

6. The learner will listen to, analyze and describe music    
6.01 formally analyze chord structures and progressions in musical forms representing diverse genres and cultures teacher observation
6.02 evaluate your own playing and demonstrate refinement of intonation and advanced decimation of pitch based on these evaluations teacher observation
6.03 Identify and describe intervals that are heard (ear training) teacher observation
7. The learner will evaluate music and performances    
7.01 develop and apply specific criteria to make informed, critical evaluations of the quality and effectiveness of performances , compositions and arrangements teacher observation
7.02 Evaluate a given musical work in terms of it’s aesthetic qualities and analyze  the musical means it uses to evoke feelings and emotions. Justify in written form or with visual product presentation Graded assignment
7.03 Listen to, analyze and evaluate the blend and balance within an instrumental ensemble. If possible recommend changes based on the evaluation teacher observation
8. The learner will understand  the relationship between music, the other arts, and content areas outside of the arts    
8.01 research and provide a written report analyzing the relationship between selected pieces of music and at least one other art form from the same culture and time period in terms of how the work reflects the artistic/cultural/historical context of time  
9. The learner will under- stand music in relationship to history and culture    
9.01 analyze distinguishing characteristics of representative examples of music to identify the genre, style, culture and or historical period of time teacher observation
9.02 Provide a written analysis of patterns, relationships and trends in music of selected cultures and historical periods to draw inferences and make predictions about past and future social outcomes
